This paper presents the Virtuoso approach for collecting, processing, and exploiting large amounts of open source data from the Web. Through the use of already available open standards we define a way of integrating heterogeneous components in a homogeneous platform. A Virtuoso application makes use of IR technologies from the NLP field to automatically populate a knowledge base. The knowledge base has a generic model which can be extended to specific fields. Content of the knowledge base can be enriched manually by the user. Knowledge contained in the knowledge base can be visualised and exploited.
